CONNECTING THREADS: Quilted Pillow Top
Under the leadership of the Arts Facet Chair and committee members, local HBCU students meet every other month beginning in September 2021 through March 2022 in this platform (Canvas course and Zoom meetings).
The 10 HBCU students will have access to a sewing machine, purchased by the Crescent City (LA) Chapter. Upon completion of the pillow, the student will be awarded the sewing machine. All participants also receive a packet with all the supplies needed to complete the project including: pre-cut fabric squares, batting, stuffing, needles, scissors, thread, pins, thimble and any other supplies needed to complete the quilted pillowtop.
The final evaluation includes completion of the Canvas course and all on-line assignments. The completed pillow is also a desired outcome.
ARTIST NOIR
Artist Noir exposes youth to a repertoire of disciplines to include, but not to be limited to, visual art (watercolors, film, and digital media), music composition (vocal or instrumental), sculpture, textile design, African dance, theater production, and fashion or interior design. Young artists are identified through a application process, and provided opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, and abilities in “the arts” through exposure with an established and/or emerging artist. Throughout the year, the novices are engaged in activities for nurturing, cultural growth, career development and performance in the the arts. The result is a performance showcase of garnered talents to share what has been learned throughout the process.
MLK Week
The Ogden Museum opened its doors for free admission during MLK week. Crescent City Links provided volunteers for art exhibits and assisted at creative stations for children. CCCL sponsored an award presented to a participant in the One Book One New Orleans – Words and Music Literary Fest. The Arts partnered with International Trends and Services in hosting the Arthur Ashe One World Diaspora Youth Club in culinary arts and international Cuisine. A cooking demonstration was held utilizing Caribbean foods.
